Overview
This module introduces the importance of qualitative research methods as a source of nursing knowledge. Qualitative research methods are defined in terms of why practice is implemented. The language and concepts encountered in qualitative studies are discussed. The module identifies and gives example to the principles and queries required for critically appraising qualitative evidence for clinical decision making. There is emphasis on the need to appropriately understand qualitative evaluative criteria in order to avoid misuse of the appraisal of studies and subsequent erroneous conclusions.
The module discusses the twelve preliminary overview questions that should be addressed in the critical appraisal of qualitative studies. Internal variation that may occur in qualitative research is described and examples are provided. The types of clinical questions commonly addressed by the qualitative methods of ethnography, grounded theory, phenomenology and hermeneutics are identified. Research techniques utilized when conducting qualitative research are described and the four general criteria for evaluating a qualitative study (credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability) are discussed, including how each of the criteria could be demonstrated. The module concludes with a how the promote the development of a valid meta-synthesis of qualitative research.
