Please choose ONE out of the four essay titles listed below:

1. ‘State law can never be ‘Islamic’ or ‘divine’ law.’ (An’Naim, 2010) Critically engage with this statement.

2. Lost in Translation? Is there such a practice as ‘adoption’ in Islamic law? Discuss in light of the sources of Islamic law.

3. Focusing on a Muslim woman’s right to divorce, critically anaylse any two of the following statutes in their respective socio-legal and political contexts. Would you consider these as ‘progressive’ steps for women’s equality?

4. Should there be formal linkages between the law courts and Islamic shariah councils in Britain, thereby giving shariah councils a binding legal authority? Assess the arguments for and against, using examples of the case law discussed in class i.e. Akhtar v Khan [2018 & 2020].
