You are to research a topic and write an essay informing a general academic audience of your findings. Your topic must address an issue in literature. As this is a research project, not a critical essay, your topic should not be your interpretation or criticism of a work of literature. Instead, it should provide information regarding an issue in literature that you think is worthy of the audience’s interest and discussion.

What types of issues are available within the broad category of literature?

  • The origins and/or development of a trope, motif, or character type in literature.
  • The comparison, or contrast, of two approaches to the same subject. For example, how is the vampire presented in Bram Stoker as compared to the vampire figure in Anne Rice?
  • The historical context in which a text took shape, or the changes in context that have changed the way that text is received.
  • The role or burden placed upon a text in society. For example, where does the phrase "banned in Boston" come from, and what conflicts does it illustrate?
  • Changes and developments in the production and distribution of texts.
  • The public role an author played during their lifetime, or the purpose to which others put that author’s life.

There are actually many topics available within the framework of literature. If you have trouble developing a topic, or determining if your topic idea is included within this umbrella, talk to me.

You must have a valid research question and provide an answer to that question supported by credible sources. A research paper is a fairly serious undertaking; you will need to have various trustworthy sources to lean on. You will have to use library resources and databases online. You may only use the sources you have identified in your annotated bibliography. You do not have to use all the sources you identified there, but you cannot use any sources you did not include in that document. Research papers should be narrow of scope and focus; if your topic is too broad, you will not be able to complete the assignment with any hope of success. Your research paper must have in-text citations and a references page in MLA format. Correct sourcing and clear attribution of the information you acquire in your research is mandatory in a research paper.

Your research paper is made up of several components which together account for 50% of your grade.

  • Topic approval, 5%. Your topic must be turned in for approval at the end of Week Two.
  • Annotated bibliography, 15%. Your annotated bibliography will contain bibliographic entries and source analysis. You will only use sources identified in this bibliography in writing your final paper. Your annotated bibliography is due at the end of Week Six.
  • Research paper, 30%. This paper should be MLA format, and 10 full pages at a minimum. Your references, graphics, charts, photographs, or title pages (i.e., anything not the essay’s body) are not included in the page count. You will turn it in on Blackboard by the end of the day Friday of Week Eight.
