Lesson Plan Assignment

Earth and Space Science is a required course for early childhood and elementary education majors.  One of the course objectives is to develop an Earth and Space science lesson plan or inquiry activity.  Your assignment is to write a lesson plan for an Earth and Space science core idea for an early childhood or elementary class (preK-5th grade) from one of these options  Download one of these options. Your lesson plan will meet a performance expectation of the Next Generation Science Standards.  Your lesson will be age appropriate, and should follow the outline below:

1.        Standard Designation (for example, 5-ESS2-1) and Performance Expectation (those are the words after the standard designation) and Disciplinary Core Idea (for example, ESS2.E- Biogeology: Plants and animals can change their environment).  Note that BOTH of these contain the letters ESS, for Earth and Space Science.

2.         Lesson Title (you make this up.  Have fun with it!)

3.         Grade level

4.         Length of Time the entire lesson will take (from 10 minutes to one hour)

5.         Performance Expectation (the words after the standard designation.  Yes, you already wrote them in #1.)

6.         Objective(s) – Write one or more objectives for this lesson, using Bloom’s taxonomy verb(s).  What is your specific objective in having the students do this lesson?

7.         Key Questions your students will be able to answer. You want to make sure your students make the right connection.  You need to make sure the questions satisfy the objective, and ultimately the performance expectation in an age appropriate way.

8.         Materials (list of materials/supplies to be used by the teacher and the students)

9.         Procedures (step by step procedures for your lesson activity, including any demonstrations; include an opening and a closing; lesson should be original, creative, address performance expectations and objective(s), age-appropriate, challenging, inquiry based, motivating for students; references must be cited; a substitute teacher should be able to follow these instructions)

10.       Classroom Management Notes (include any Lesson Modifications to ensure all students can accomplish objectives—including learning disabled or students with other disabilities).  If the answer is “none”, discuss how your lesson plan is designed so that all students can participate equally (universal design).

11.       Assessment Tool (how will you assess that your students have mastered the topic?)

12.       Homework/Enrichment (for highly able students; what will you do if they finish early?)
