Question One

As the most famous survivor of captivity during King Philip’s War, Mary Rowlandson gives her account of the horrors she faced while being held for ransom. Her narrative sheds light on how time changes the interactions between settlers and Natives as the Natives become openly hostile and engage in outright war. Although the attack on Lancaster is the direct result of the settlers’ having attacked a group of Natives, Rowlandson paints the Natives as savages who attack unprovoked. Examine Rowlandson’s text closely to see if her captors treat her as harshly as other captives have been treated in the readings thus far. Remember to make your answer at least 200 words.

Cotton Mather’s view of the New England settlement is comparable to information given by Winthrop, and his account of the captivity of Hannah Dustan resembles Mary Rowlandson’s saga.
