Deadline: January 10, 2022 (to be submitted electronically via Blackboard by 1:00 pm) Wordcount: 4000 words (+/- 10%)
Weighting: 70%
Assignment: Materials Design for an English Language Context
The information below is presented as two tasks so as to make things easier for you to understand, but when you submit the actual assignment it will come as one piece of work where ‘Task One’ effectively becomes the appendix to your report.
TASK ONE: Design a set of materials for the purpose of covering a two hour teaching session plus self-study or homework follow up. These materials will be provided as an appendix.
TASK TWO: You then have to produce a report on the materials that you have designed, using the following template and headings for guidance. You do not have to follow everything exactly as laid out here, but this will help give you a general sense of the direction you want to go in, in the first instance.
CONTEXTUALISATION/INTRODUCTION – In this section you need to describe your target group of students (age/level/specialisation/profession etc) and the specific language point or skills that you have chosen to teach them. Keep the language formal.
DESCRIPTION OF THE MATERIALS – In this section you need to explain what the materials are, even if you feel that it should be obvious from the design. In academic writing, everything has to be made explicit. Therefore you need to say what the materials are and how they might be used in a lesson. This may include some mention of staging and sequencing of activities etc, as well as some reference to theory
RATIONALE FOR THESE MATERIALS – What is the theoretical rationale for using these materials? You can also include practical reasons within this section.
ANTICIPATED ISSUES OR CHALLENGES WITH THESE MATERIALS – Are there likely to be any issues with using these materials? Again, you are expected to make reference to theory here.
CLOSING STATEMENT AND REFLECTION UPON DESIGN PROCESS – Just as in any academic essay or report, you should have a closing paragraph that essentially sums up what you have said in the body of your work. You may also reflect upon the design process so long as you remain objective.
============================================================================== Referencing: You must follow the standard university system and show evidence of having accessed a wide range of sources to inform your analysis. There is no set rule as to the minimum or maximum number of sources, but please aim to have at least one source in each paragraph.

Marking criteria: The standard system, as found in the handbook, will be used. To pass this particular assignment you will need to demonstrate awareness of how the material can be used in practice and the advantages and pitfalls of it and relate this to appropriate theories and readings about materials design.
Please make sure to…
– Submit your work on time. Late submission will only be considered under extenuating circumstances.
– Use Times New Roman (font 12; double-spaced).
– Put the full title at the beginning of the essay.
– Make sure your name is clearly labeled on the first page of your essay. – Attach a bibliography which is correctly set out
