To give you practical experience in implementing the quantitative methods taught in this course and to help you see how you can successfully improve business processes using Statistical Thinking, the principle assignments of the class are mini-projects of your own choosing. I wanted it to be this way so that the course would be meaningful to you since you are going to study something that is important to you and not simply work on a case study or word problem assigned by me. This is authentic assessment.
- Project #1: Descriptive Statistics and Data Visualization.
Recall that the objectives of the course are for students to be able to:
- Design data collection plans
- Collect and organize data using Microsoft Excel
- Analyze that data using Microsoft Excel
- Arrive at right answers
- Convert right answers into business decisions
- Present findings persuasively using appropriate data visualization tools and language
So, in your first project, you will focus on some process in your personal or professional life that generates data. You will demonstrate that you can design a data collection plan, collect data, organize it in Microsoft Excel and create appropriate graphs and charts to convey to your readers what the data means.
The Mini-Projects must be submitted as Microsoft WORD documents with relevant graphs and charts imported from Microsoft Excel.
P.S. It has to have AT LEAST 7 columns and 7 rows. Something about popular singers like Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber, etc. Categories can be like “tickets sold, worth, years performing, how many awards, their age, how many Instagram followers”. You will need to use pivot tables and charts.
