Introduction

Administrative agencies at the federal level are created by Congress and signed into law by the President.  Administrative agencies are unique because they have both legislative and executive authority; specifically, they can create laws and subsequently enforce them. An example of a federal administrative agency would be the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  The EPA had the power to tell the oil company BP not to use a certain toxic chemical agent when cleaning up an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  Subsequently, they also had the power to enforce this law by fining the company BP for the continued use of the chemical agent.  Agencies have the power to issue regulations within their area of expertise, and those regulations have the full force of law. They also have the power of enforcement of the regulations as well as inspection and, and if violations are found, those who are not in compliance may face a hearing before a board that has the power to fine.

Some examples of other administrative agencies are as follows: the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Department of Health & Human Services, the Department of Labor, and the Department of Agriculture.
