Post a description of what you believe to be the consequences of a healthcare organization not involving nurses in each stage of the SDLC when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system. Provide specific examples of potential issues at each stage of the SDLC and explain how the inclusion of nurses may help address these issues. Then, explain whether you had any input in the selection and planning of new health information technology systems in your nursing practice or healthcare organization and explain the potential impacts of being included or not in the decision-making process. Nurses have a significant role in the systems development life cycle. SDLC consists of 7 phases: planning, designing, analysis, development, integration, testing, and maintenance. This involves the maintenance of managing and creating applications efficiently (Ehrler, 2019). SDLC is significant in nursing; involving the nurses in the initial phase of the software development ensures better products that are relevant and different clinically. Nurses can participate in the initial identification and improvement area for quality patient care: the paper researches and reviews the different stages o the SDLC in nursing.

The SDLC uses a scientific approach and problem-solving. The planning stage as the organization starts once an organization has an existing requirement that may be solved and be filled by developing and implementing the application or the EHR (Louis, 2011). The following are done in the planning stage gap analysis, project scope, and project governance structurethe analysis majors on the functional designing, the system proposal, and the technical requirement. In the design, there are usually specialized and available specifications. In the development, it focuses on the plans. In customization, its main task is usually to make procedures and policies. The implementation, maintenance, evaluation, and support deals with the operations, plans, and ongoing maintenance of the types of equipment and technology.

Before organizations purchases the medical equipment, the hospital considers a proper location of the place it will be kept that should be safe. It also inspects all the parts and proper assembly, the specialist tests the functionality and instruction of use are considered (Akinsola, 2020). The inputs considered are the number of doctors, number of nurses, the salaries. In the decision-making, the areas of focus are the example of electronic health records. The consequence of health care organizations not involving nurses, in the situation where they are not involved in the decision making and design process of the SDLC the outcome can be catastrophic since it is regarded not safe, a key consideration, is that nurses spend more time with patients, therefore their input is considered highly valuable. About three years ago a universal EMR was implemented in my organization. Nurses were surveyed years prior to the change in order to get their input. Their opinion was taken into consideration during the selection and planning of this new health information technology system in my organization. A potential impact of nurses being excluded from the process is lack of compliance which in turn affects patient care negatively. If the new EMR is not used properly, quality care and patients outcome will be directly affected.
