Please write 1-2 pages (~250-500 words) addressing the following.

In "Black Body," Teju Cole notes how James Baldwin’s "Stranger in the Village" “begins with a sense of an extreme journey… but then opens out into other concerns and into a different voice, swiveling to look at the American racial situation." (pp 2-3) He also describes (with some help from Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts) this ‘swiveling’ as a “sudden widening of focus.” (p 4) What he is attempting to describe is the shape of the essay, or better yet the moment on which the essay as a whole turns.

Cole’s essay takes a very different shape, one that perhaps cannot be said to turn, like Baldwin’s, on a certain moment or passage. How would you describe that shape, or structure? Is there a particular passage that seems to carry the weight of the essay, or holds the secret to its meaning? Or are there perhaps several points held together as if on a string? Or something else? Some possibilities were discussed in class, but perhaps you noticed something different. Whatever it is, write about that, how you understand the shape of what Cole is doing, with reference to something specific in the text.

You don’t have to complete the thought, or understand the essay perfectly, just write a page or so where you begin to work out the problem.
