In order to gain more understanding around social media applications and related technologies, you are going to take a deep dive researching one of the topics below through a research essay. The goal of this research essay is for you to select a social media app/platform AND a related technology. Students should:

Research (This section must have parenthetical citations) (about 3 pages)
research the social media platform and related technology
explain what the social media platform and related technology does and describe how the two are interconnected.
explain how the platform has changed or evolved over the years, in part due to the impact of the technology you’ve chosen
explain how people are using the social media platform and how the demographics of users have changed over time
NOTE: You must address EACH of the bullets above in your research essay!

Opinion / Your Own Thoughts (about 1 page)
based on your research and own thoughts, speculate how the social media platform and/or technology might change and/or be used in the future
share best practices for using the social platform professionally/personally/academically
explain how you might leverage what you have learned in your own personal brand.

Make sure you include a Works Cited Page (this does not count toward the 4 page requirement). You must use MLA format.

You must use a minimum of 3 sources for this paper.
Please format it with double spaced 12 point standard font (Arial or Times New Roman), 1-inch margins.
The Works Cited page does not count toward your 4-page requirement.
It’s okay to include some personal experiences in your paper if you have experience with the tool/technology.
Word or PDF File Formats only! Google Docs, .pages, or other formats will not receive credit.
If you need help writing a research-based essay – you can consult the Writing Center at Stony Brook.
Without any citations and/or works cited page – you will receive a zero. Do research.

Tips:
However, here are some things we noticed while grading the research papers in previous semesters:
Important to adhere to the format requested – font, size, margins, etc
Understand how to cite in MLA or APA format.
In-text citations or direct references to sources are important and required.
Lack of research(sources) by definition does not constitute a research paper
Citations and Works Cited/Reference pages are required for all research papers
Works Cited Page and format are important – websites like citation machines help with this.
Quotes need to always have a citation!
Research Papers need multiple sources to be valid – at least 3.
Proper heading – at least your name, date, the title of the paper.
If you do not know the proper way to write a research paper, you might want to consider going to the writing lab and asking for help.
Failure to cite your sources or to cite them incorrectly (intentionally or unintentionally) is a possible violation of the academic integrity statement as per the University.

Note: Plagiarism is a serious offense. Using other people’s work or even your own work from another course will result in an academic dishonesty report.
Note: In a true research paper you would not be asked for your opinion, however, we would like to hear from your own voice at the end.
