A strong analysis should carefully consider the parts of the original and synthesize them into a new text: your essay. A successful analysis presents useful, interesting, and significant conclusions that teach the reader something new about the text being analyzed. For this essay, your assignment is to create a rhetorical analysis of a written argument.
Analyze a set of elements in an argument (claim, support, warrant, etc.use Toulmin here) or complementary strategies (how the author uses metaphor, irony, definition, biased language and diction, etc.) from one of the following articles posted in the Essay 1 folder under Readings for Essay 1:
This essay should be 4-6 pages long, contain at least 4 body paragraphs, and follow MLA formatting. Please go beyond examining ethos, pathos, and logos. You can examine two of those, plus kairos, but you need to include one other element or complementary strategy (see the paragraph above this one or review your notes from class discussions for a list of appropriate ones). Also, be sure to include a Works Cited page, particularly if you do any additional research related to the authors or the authors’ sources. Note: Wikipedia doesnt count as a good source, but you can certainly use it as a starting point to set you on the right track, if necessary. Each of the writers for the articles has a biography page on their newspapers website, so thats probably the best place to start researching them.
