Directions for Paper 3

In order to build upon what you’ve learned, and upon the comments I’ve made (always with an eye toward improvement), Paper 3 will be identical to Papers 1 and 2 — a close analysis of a single text that engages with the issues of the course.  Choose one of the two texts, and write a paper with a thesis statement and a development of it with reference to specifics from the text.  The same page requirements and format requirements obtain here. 

 

For M. Carey Thomas’s journals and letters  

Obviously, given our emphasis you could examine M. Carey Thomas’s relationships to her friends, especially the friend from her college years, Miss Hicks.  You can also try to consider her attitude toward marriage as well and her attitude toward the "boys" at Cornell College.  What does this tell us about the development of friendship in this period and its relationship to marriage.

For Albee’s A Delicate Balance

You can also focus on friendship in A Delicate Balance between one of the two "bestfriends" — Agnes and Edna or Toby and Harry.  How has friendship changed from the days of David and Jonathan?  Is it marriage that is impeding its development, or something else?  What is the relationship between the nuclear family (an extension of companionate marriage) and friendship.  You can develop this by focusing on the attitudes of specific characters.  Any consideration of the friendship of Harry and Tobias must grapple with the tour de force that is the final Act of the play, in which Tobias tries to persuade Harry — finally — to stay.  What tone does this have?
