Assignment: Type up an essay (4 pages max, not including Works Cited page) that takes a position FOR or AGAINST on either Princess Culture or Paying College Athletes and submit the essay online.
Remember: Focus on only one position (either FOR or AGAINST) and offer four topic points that support your position. If, however, you are arguing FOR paying college athletes, then you will provide three topic points followed by a detailed explanation of how college athletes will be financially compensated.
You must accomplish all of the following:
1a. MLA: The essay must be MLA format: Times New Roman, 12 point font, double spaced, no title page, centered title, no spaces between paragraphs, last name and page number in upper right header, with work cited page. Front page also includes your full name, professor’s name, class, and date. These four items are double spaced and in the upper left corner of page 1.
1b. Length & Paragraphs: Essay is 4 pages typed max, with a minimum of 6 paragraphs. The Works Cited page does not count as the 4 page max limit.
1c. Title: You need a title that identifies both the title of the subject as well as your prompt position on the topic.
2. Opening Strategy: You must incorporate an Opening Strategy (OS) with any of the following: Personal Experience (PE), Other People’s Experience (OPE), Hypothetical (HYPO), Case Scenario (CS), or Hypo-Combo. Introduction should be 1 to 2 paragraphs. Your Introduction will end with your thesis statement.
3. Thesis: Your thesis must be the last sentence of the final paragraph of your introduction.
4. Topic Sentences & Body Structure: You must begin each body paragraph with a new topic sentence. It should be one sentence only. Be clear and concise. You need a minimum of four body paragraphs: 4 body paragraphs to illustrate the the topic points of each position. If you are arguing FOR paying college athletes, you must provide three body paragraphs that illustrate the position, followed by 1 body paragraph to illustrate how college athletes will be compensated. Each body paragraph must start with the topic sentence.
5. Signal Phrases: You must set up quotes with signal phrases that illustrate context. Your signal phrase must flow smoothly into the quote.
6. Evidence: You need a minimum of 3 to 5 examples (facts, stats, quotes from expert authority, case scenarios, etc.) as evidence to support each topic point paragraph. Evidence is not required for fourth body paragraph of the FOR paying college athletes that must illustrate “how to compensate college athletes,” but you must still illustrate how the the financial compensation will be implemented.
7. Responses: Make sure that you are responding to your quotes with critical analysis.
8. Conclusion: You must book end your essay by revisiting the Opening Strategy (OS) that you started in your Introduction.
9. Works Cited Page: The final page will the be work cited, which documents the source material.
10. Research Sources: You must use a minimum of 4 sources, with a minimum of 2 from the Library Databases. These sources must be documented as in-text citations in the essay as well as correctly presented on the Works Cited Page.
