Question for Module-D Assignment
You might think of this paper as the end of the first part of the course, in which we
studied two main theories of well-being, hedonism and desire theory.
Would you plug-in to the Experience Machine for life? Why or why not? Explain.
Remember that any claim you make (belief you espouse) should be supported by
reasons. Your paper should get into some of the difficult issues that the Experience
Machine introduces, and it should reflect a clear understanding of hedonism and desire
theory. Make sure that you say something about the critical leverage the Experience
Machine has against hedonism and even desire theory. You should begin by explaining
what the machine is, and then drawing the distinction between (a) the imagined machine
itself and (b) Nozick’s thought experiment called the experience machine.
Given your response to the initial question, are you adopting the position of a hedonist,
desire theorist, or neither? This is important for showing that you understand the
theories as well as the critical traction of the experience machine thought experiment.
Be sure to use very plain language, and/or define any technical terms you use that a
reader who has not read the text would not understand. Remember, no quotations are
permitted.
Focus only on our reading and my podcast lecture. Do not use other sources. Why?—Two
reasons: (1) It will lead you astray; your paper will be worse because of it. (2) Studying
philosophy is more about learning to think than it is about finding-and-repeating
answers to questions. If you use the internet to find answers, you will skip the most
important part of the course (and, as I say, in my experience, your answers will typically
be wrong).
