Parenthetical citations with text title and page number is all that is required.  Any external source used ought to be cited! Check library website on proper way to cite internet sources.  However, answers should not be primarily based on external sources.

  1. Immanuel Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason is said to have inspired a “Copernican Revolution” in philosophy.  Describe Kant’s metaphysics and how it answers Hume’s skepticism. (Include terms like Pure Concepts of Understanding and Synthetic A priori knowledge.)  Why is Kant’s work considered a “Copernican revolution?”  (In other words, explain the lasting impact of Kant’s metaphysics on philosophy).

Explain Hegel’s phrase “The Real is Rational and the Rational is Real.”  How does this phrase connect to Hegel’s Absolute Idealism and Philosophy of History?  How is this phrase linked to Hegel’s theory of the Dialectic?  Make sure to include ideas like the Master/Slave dialectic and its relationship to consciousness, the relationship of idea to culture, etc.

Karl Marx’s Historical Materialism is said to have turned Hegel’s Philosophy of History on its head.  Explain what this means.  Explain the role of alienation, ideology, conditions of labor, division of labor and their relationship to exploitation, the crisis of Capitalism and the eventual revolution that should lead to the beginning of Communism.

Jean-Paul Sartre is known for his phenomenological existentialism. Starting with Descartes Cogito, Sartre’s philosophical work identifies the structure of human consciousness. Define and explain Sartre’s idea of consciousness including the significance of the concept of Nothingness and the metaphysical structures which are the basis for consciousness.  Explain the relationship and significance of the “Look” to consciousness (what structure of consciousness does it produce? How does it affect us?)  How are the Sartrean structures of consciousness related to the problem of freedom and determinism, the concepts of facticity and the situation, anguish and responsibility, authenticity and bad faith?
