Constructing a well thought-out and logical argument is difficult. By going through the rigorous critical thinking process you can demonstrate sound thinking while also being persuasive. Please write a well thought-out blog post and consider the following:
- Choose a topic of your choice and construct a brief argument. Example from the Week 6 Lesson: school uniforms.
- Use either Classical, Rogerian, or Toulmin. You do not have to have mastered these types of argument, give it a good try.
- Incorporate what you learned from Week 5 and 6 Lessons, the textbook, and Readings and Resources.
In your blog, clearly state which of the three you are using and clearly label the parts of the argument. For example, if you use the Classical style, you MUST have at least 5 sections (paragraphs) and clearly label your parts:
- Introduction:
- Statement of the background:
- Position:
- Proof:
- Refutation:
Be very clear you understand the “refutation” part. There will be a detailed announcement on this at the beginning of the week. For all three styles, there is a place where you must give the other side of the argument and then offer a counterargument to this other side affirming why your position is better. See the announcement on this topic.
NOTE, since you are making an argument, it is important to back up your assertions with credible research. You need documentation for this to be completed properly. You may use either APA or MLA but have clear citations where the information is used and a reference for the source. The citations in the body of the argument demonstrate where and that you used the resource and must be used before you can list any resource as a reference. Keep in mind that documentation is worth 10 points.
