Attendance at a Political Event

Students in this course are required to participate in a political event and write a summary of the event. Your learning experience should be centered around advancing your knowledge related to health related issues and legislation that is either in place or proposed to eliminate barriers to quality, safe patient care, to address community health issues, and/or to eliminate disparities for vulnerable populations.

Examples of attendance at a political event include but are not limited to opportunities where you are able to ask questions and share your ideas through advocacy:

  • Meeting with a county, state, federal, or congressional legislative representative.
  • Touring of the state capital and lobbying a legislator or their representative in a face-to-face situation.
  • Speaking to a legislator on the phone (or someone in their office who can represent the legislator and speak to their beliefs/agendas).
  • Participating in a lobby day with a designated organization (e.g. NYSNA) (availability may be for spring term classes only).
  • Attending a political event such as a local town council meeting, county legislature meeting, national event, or a public hearing where a legislator(s) is (are) in attendance.

The summary must be related to nursing and the course objectives. For example, if you tour the capital you will need to discuss a recent health care agenda item/bill/legislation in the house or senate with a legislative representative and align your learning with the course objectives that apply:

  1. Describe the history and current organization of the United States health care delivery system.
  2. Identify socio-cultural, economic, political, and legal variables impacting health policy formation.
  3. Explain the professional responsibility of the registered nurse in terms of advocacy and political engagement.
  4. Evaluate legislative and regulatory processes including equity, access, affordability, and social justice.
  5. Analyze the future of health care services and the registered nurses responsibilities as influenced by the current U.S. health care delivery system.

Submit a brief 3-4 page (not including title and reference pages) summary of your experience and include the following:

  • Detail of demographics of political event,
  • Summary of learning related to issue(s),
  • Thorough information of the associated legislation (include bill # if appropriate) introduced at the political event,
  • Relation to nursing profession,
  • Relate what new information was learned to Course Objectives, and
  • Support all information with scholarly sources referenced in APA format including title page, references and in-text citations.

This portion of the project entails advanced planning. It is recommended to plan this portion of the project early in the course. Please receive approval that the event meets the assignment requirements, from your instructor, prior to making final plans and committing to the event.
