Why a Writer Portrait?
You are a writer. You’ve been participating in the act of writing for a long time now, probably since you were in elementary schooland maybe even before! As a teacher of writing, I want you to understand that you already have established habits as a writer. Identifying those habits will help you employ successful writing strategies (or change them) in this class and beyond. A lot of your success in this class correlates to being self-aware of your writing process!
What is a Writer Portrait?
A Writer Portfolio is a self-study of your writing process. A portrait is a “snapshot” of a person’s inner self. In this portrait, I want you to examine yourself as a writer and the way that you have written in the pastfor school, with friends, at work, etc. You’ll be examining the conscious and unconscious writing habits that you have developed. The Writer’s Portrait is a brief examination of your experience with writing. It is written like a reflection.
How do I write a Writer Portrait?
I would encourage you to look at your writing process for several types of writing before beginning this assignment, then choose one that you feel would be interesting to write about. Consider the following questions about your writing process to get started (but do not answer these questions one-by-one in your portrait):
- What is my pre-writing process?
- What medium do I like to write with?
- What goes on inside of my brain as I write?
- Where do I like to write?
- Do I need any physical object to write?
- What type of environment do I write best in?
