I chose to work on the Pacific Tsunami Warning System project. I have uploaded some poster project examples in the files. You can use a blank poster in the files to fill out.

For our final course projects  we want you to take a deeper dive into Earth system vulnerabilities and resources building on the skills you have developed throughout the course.

Some may choose to focus how we have developed a better way to cope with a particular Earth System natural disaster (e.g., tsunami, volcano, earthquake warning systems; building better to protect against natural disasters and to control nature), while others may choose an emerging technology at play to restore Earth system processes back to their pre-industrial status (e.g., capitalizing on Earth system processes to enhance carbon storage).  You should be sure to pick a distinct from earlier project submissions, but it is OK if they are linked (for example if learned about tsunamis in project 2, you could certainly delve into regional tsunami warning systems for the final project).

You will need to submit the topic for your project by the end of this week (12/3/2021 by 11:59 pm)

Please pay attention and make sure to use suitable references.  Please note the rubric requires the construction of a poster (not a slide show).

Poster Presentations: The posters should be prepared and submitted electronically and should be 36″ x 48″. You can prepare as ONE poster-sized slide in Power Point, Adobe products or in Google Slides. It is fine if you use Keynote (apple product), but please export it as a PDF or as a PPT so others (including your instructors) may view it. Prof. Bryce can help with this if you are not sure how to do it- check with her during her office hours!

You can use the Undergraduate Research Conference Poster advice page as a guide for the creation of your project. Choose a template, but please be sure to read the guidelines to organize your thoughts, graphics and prepare it in accordance with guidelines. Again, please do not prepare a slideshow.

Once again, your work must be properly referenced and include scientific references (not just e-encyclopedias/Wikipedia/etc.). Government websites (National Park Service, Environmental Protection Agency, US Geological Survey, NASA, Scientific Organizations in other countries may also be great sources).

Figures as well as ideas borrowed from publications must be acknowledged.

Suitable references are used: Government websites can be cited (USGS, NASA, Climate Change assessment, United Nations, State and other national/international government science websites).

Popular press articles can be okay in moderation, but if they are writing about a scientific paper, please also be sure to look at that paper and cite that as well.

Quoting lecture materials or discussions with the teaching team are not suitable references (particularly when used as a substitute for references you are directed to pursue).

Quoting large chunks of text is not suitable for poster presentations– it is essential to put material in your own words!

Posters fully meeting expectations will clearly identify the Earth System vulnerability of interest, explain the relevant Earth System-Human System Interactions and impacts through appropriate visuals and text, document all information with appropriate references and be free of grammatical and presentation errors or inconsistencies.

Note we have turned on TurnItIn to help you identify times when  (inadvertently and we hope not purposefully) you have plagiarized your sources. I have made it such that you can check how Turnitin evaluates submission- do not worry about your references section (they will ring up as plagiarized). Worry about your text instead and use this tool to make sure you’ve paraphrased your notes well enough!

Project grade breakdown:

Your project grades will come both from your topic, presentation, your review of your peers, and your reflection of your peers projects as well as your own.

+ 5 points for project topic submission (on which you will get some feedback). Note that since we are also learning by listening to elevator pitches there may be a limit on the number of projects for “popular” topics (Topics will be submitted by 11.59 PM on 12/03/2021)

+ 80 points for the project itself  (see rubric below) – projects are due 12/20 at 12.30 pm (Note we are extending a week to help with the juggle around the final push – beyond the 12/13 posted on the syllabus – but PLEASE turn in projects early- by the original schedule- so you have some well deserved downtime)

+ 15 points for both giving your elevator speech (5) and attending and watching your colleagues elevator pitches with your full attention (in other words: electronic distractions need to be minimized during these class periods when you are watching others- your teaching team has thick skin and experience talking to a room of folks distracted by cell phones, but your classmates deserve your full attention (and we demand an inclusive environment where everyone is entitled to give an oral presentation without distractions).
