As you have read in this week’s required readings, there are three fundamental sources of power (or five when you look at expert and referent power) in any organization. Choose an organization you have worked for or researched and analyze the forms of power. Legitimate Power – The legal right to make a decision and expect compliance is called legitimate power. The CEO of an organization typically has the most legitimate power. Reward Power – The authority to give employees rewards for their performance is reward power. This includes everything from a cash bonus for meeting a goal to an annual performance review. Coercive Power – The power to punish for not meeting an established expectation is coercive power. An example of coercive power is demoting a manager who is not complying with the leaders plans. & Information Power – The power to formally control the information people need to do their work is information power. An example is a sales manager who controls the leads from customer inquiries, not sharing them with the sales team. Referent power is the ability to influence others through ones desirable traits and characteristics. Expert power is the ability to influence others through specialized knowledge, skills, or abilities.
