Proposal Method and Results

This Assignment is designed to aid your progress in crafting the final Research Proposal (Signature Assignment). Here, our goal is the production of an outline for the Method section and a sketch of expected data for the Results section.

A. Write a sentence outline for the Method section of your Research Proposal. Ultimately, the method should contain all information that would be necessary for a reader to understand your results and for a colleague to replicate your study. Include the following critical elements:

Participants: Give demographic variables of the ideal sample and give details about the sampling method.
Design: Is the design an experiment, quasi-experiment, correlation, etc? How are the variables operationalized?
Materials: What materials are necessary to conduct the study? List any specialized equipment or tests.
Procedure: In roughly chronological order, what *exactly* is to be done with the participants?
Statistical Analyses: What descriptive and inferential statistics will you employ to report your results?

B. Write a sentence outline of the expected results. Include one sentence for each dependent variable or outcome variable that you plan to measure. You can also include a table of ideal data or a figure depicting ideal results.

Correlations and Experiments

For each of the research scenarios depicted below (A-E):

  1. State whether the design is an experiment or a correlation.
  2. State the Independent or Predictor variables.
  3. State the Dependent or Criterion variables.

A. A research team is interested in the relationship between personality and social interaction. With a survey, an investigator records various social and personality variables of a group of participants. Among the variables, the investigator specifically evaluates the relationship between Extraversion score and number of Facebook friends

B. A research team is interested in the relationship between arousal and performance, specifically if higher levels of arousal are related to better performance. An investigator administers, to 4 groups of participants, 4 doses of caffeine (0mg, 40mg, 80mg, 120mg). Afterward, the investigator measures performance on a reaction-time task, in milliseconds, where participants must hit a button as quickly as possible when a signal is given.

C. A research team is interested in the relationship between gender and aggression. An investigator observes children on the schoolyard playground. The investigator records the percentage of recess time that each child spends aggressing against classmates. The investigator then compares the girls and boys, on the percent time spent fighting.

D. A research team is interested in the relationship between high-school performance and later income. An investigator ranks 300 members of a graduating class from 1st to 300th. The investigator then ranks them by salary, from 1st to 300th, five years later. The investigator evaluates the relationship between the 2 sets of ranks.

E. A research team is interested in the relationship between development and cognition. An investigator administers an intelligence test to the same set of individuals at ages 6, 10, 14, 18, and 22. The data are analyzed to see if the intelligence scores change over the 5 measures.

In your document, please use the letters and numbers to organize your answers (e.g. “A1. The design is A2. The independent variable is etc.”)
