Forum Instructions
Each student must post (1) substantial initial post with a minimum of 250 words by Wednesday of each week before 11:59 PM. All posts and replies must contain at least (2) professional references, one may be the course textbook, properly cited in the current APA 7th format.
The student must also reply to at least (2) classmates using a minimum of 75 words per reply by Friday before 11:59 PM. All replies in the discussion forum should enhance the discussion. Non-informative messages posted in the discussion forum will not be counted towards the required number of replies for that topic.
Discussion Topic
Choose ONE of the following two topics to address in your initial 300 word post.
- Why are certain factors such as age, region, class, race, religion, and education so salient in terms of voting predictability? Explore these factors to explain what about each of these factors would make an individual vote in any particular way, and discuss whether these categories have changed over time.
- How closely should politicians follow public opinion in making their decisions? Should polls govern? What problems do governing by public-opinion polls create for democracies? Engage students in a discussion of the shortcomings of public-opinion polls as a reflection of what the public wants by highlighting problems in conducting polls and the volatility of public opinion.
