When choosing a topic, be sure that you can thread ideas expressed and discussed through each book we have read. All topics and topic ideas must relate to our theme for the course: social justice and the oppression of “others” within our culture and society.
• In addition to the three books, you must use/analyze/synthesize/document six to eight additional secondary sources, which can include literary criticism, historical background/analysis, sociological theories, and research studies found in academic journals. Only two of these sources may come from websites (this is a specific entity, not the databases through Cook Library).
Required Sections:
• Introduction – introducing the main topic and all subtopics and ending with your well-developed thesis (1 paragraph)
• Candide – 1 Summary of chapters that relate to your topic(s) (1-2 paragraphs), 2 Literary Analysis of literary elements that relate to your topic(s) (1 paragraph), and 3 Synthesis of Voltaire’s influences from his society and afterwards (what are some influences after Voltaire’s time)(2-3 paragraphs)
• Flatland – 1 Summary of chapters that relate to your topic(s) (1-2 paragraphs), 2 Literary Analysis of literary elements that relate to your topic(s) (1 paragraph), and 3 Synthesis of Edwin Abbott’s influences from his society and afterwards (2-3 paragraphs)
• Wes Moore – 1 Summary of chapters that relate to your topic(s) (1-2 paragraphs) and 2 Synthesis of Wes Moore’sinfluences from his society and afterwards (2-3 paragraphs)
• Conclusion – restating thesis in new words, summarizing all key points from your body sections, making summative statements about your main topic as a whole as a result of your project’s development of the issues, and making future implications statements (what are the next steps for your main topic/issue into the future – what needs to happen?)
