What do you think is at stake in the dialogue? In other words, what do you think is the significance of the dialogue?
Of the two possibilities, namely (a) the gods love something because it is good, or (b) things are good because the gods love it, which one do you think is the correct answer and why?
Notice, that one does not need to believe in God or gods for this question to be significant, we could also ask ourselves if a person’s behavior is good because it is legal or if it is legal because it is good, or alternatively we could also ask if laws are moral/good because they are state sanctioned, or if these laws are state sanctioned because they are moral/good?
