In a lecture, it was argued that we should think of Islamists as separate from violent jihadis. Schmid seems to argue that even if there is a difference, that within the context of Western liberal democracies, nearly all Islamists are well outside the mainstream and are therefore a type of extremist. That they are “two sides of the same coin”.
