The Indivisible Whole is the title of Senges Coda Chapter 18. In it he recounts the story of astronaut Rusty Schweickarts experience seeing plant Earth from space as he orbits it every hour and a half.  Of note, is his remarkable recount:

And there it is. That whole process begins to shift what it is you identify with. When you go around it [Earth] in an hour and a half you begin to recognize that your identity is with the whole thing. And that makes a change. You look down there and you cant imagine how many borders and boundaries you crossed again and again and again. And you dont even see em. At that wake-up scenethe Mideastyou know there are hundreds of people killing each other over some imaginary line that you cant see. From where you see it, the thing is a whole, and its so beautiful. And you wish you could take one from each side in hand and say, Look at it from this perspective. Look at that. Whats important?

As Senge concludes, Schweickart had had the visceral experience of systems thinking. The whole of planet Earth cannot be deconstructed any more than you can, without loosing, its or your identity.

In a similar fashion, a corporation or organization is an entity with an identity its culture is not deconstructable. It’s what makes the whole greater than the sum of its (parts) people, assets and customers.

Popularizing systems thinking was probably one of Senge’s greatest contributions, yet it still remains beyond common understanding in organizations. What is positive, however is the realization that organizational culture the DNA system, is a motivating force!

In a recent survey by , My organizations culture/policies ranked in the top three choices by 43% of chief executives.

Deloitte deducted from the survey that there appear to be 4 leadership styles, which are emerging across industries to adapt to technological change.

This session marks our last before you have an opportunity on Friday to post comments and observations on excerpts/themes from your Final Papers or Book Reviews. The World Economic Forum, in Davos 2020 themed “Stakeholder Capitalism” was befitting – stakeholder was the key word. It’s befitting of a world where some are trying to acknowledge they are in a multi-stakeholder system. In 2019 it was Globalization 4.0.

Two months after Davos 2020 wrapped up our world changed with the rise of a global pandemic and Covid-19.

It is no surprise that Davos 2021 running from January 25 – 29 incorporated the themes from the past three years in a heightened context of the pandemic:

The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated that no institution or individual alone can address the economic, environmental, social and technological challenges of our complex, interdependent world. The pandemic has accelerated systemic changes that were apparent before its inception. The fault lines that emerged in 2020 now appear as critical crossroads in 2021. The time to rebuild trust and to make crucial choices is fast approaching as the need to reset priorities and the urgency to reform systems grow stronger around the world.

The Davos Agenda is a pioneering mobilization of global leaders to shape the principles, policies and partnerships needed in this challenging new context. It is essential for leaders from all walks of life to work together virtually for a more inclusive, cohesive and sustainable future as soon as possible in 2021.

WEF Davos 2022 Agenda, is still shadowed by Covid-19, however there are many excellent free presentations on topics related to other organizational strategies. Go to the World Economic Forum  and pick what you find as most relevant to corporate culture and systems learning.

And for those of you who are more focused on the leadership side of the culture coin, I highly recommend Jeremy Heimans and Henry Timms (former CEO, 92Y) discussion of their book “New Power”, a guide to spreading ideas, building movements, and leaping ahead in our chaotic, connected age.

Timms has left the 92Y to become President of Lincoln Center

In Timms’s view, “It is a real irony that in an age when we are all so much more connected by technology, too many of us are ultimately feeling disconnected, not just from each other but from those things that truly bring joy and purpose into our lives. The performing artslike no other forcehelp us rediscover not only the spirit of community but also a sense of real meaning.”

There is a caveat in Timm’s view on the irony of connection by technology, one of which an evolving organizational culture needs to be vigilant – that they do not create isolating echo chambers, much like the silos of the 19th century!
