Directions: Reflect on what you learned while researching and writing your argument research paper on your social problem issue in the world this past semester. Please read the guidelines below to the bottom of the page, as it will help you write your reflection essay.
Often, we form an opinion about a social problem issue without knowing all of the facts. It is easy for someone else to prove us wrong when this happens. The purpose of research is to educate us about a topic to process the information and make a claim supported by the evidence that we found. It is our first step in creating a valid argument about an issue. Please address all of the following questions below in your reflection essay:
- Introduce the following: Describe your interest in your research topic on a world’s social problem/injustice issue that you covered in your research paper this semester. Explain why you had selected this research project for the semester. Please identify what you wanted to persuade others to understand better and reevaluate their view/position about this social problem/injustice issue around the world.
- What was most meaningful about your writing for the research paper, why was it meaningful to you, and what do you think your professor hoped you would learn from your research and develop as applicable to writing in the future?
- (Important for the third part of this section; Consider why would your professor want you to learn about social problems and take a stance on a world issue. If you bring up that it’s about grammar or MLA is the only thing you learned, then you have clearly missed the point of this course and why we did research, why write about social problems in the world, or why be asked to think about the solutions and a course of action to prevent injustices in the world. Do you see how you might have developed stronger reasoning with logic and facts rather than only relying on your opinions? How have you learned to make a more convincing argument or how have you improved your critical and analytical thinking skills, and so on to help you in your future writing?)
- What did you think you already knew about your topic, what information did you have wrong, and what surprised you about any new information, facts, or data that you discovered through research? Explain why that is the case.
- How did your opinion change after you did the research? Why should this social injustice topic matter to you and everyone else, and how is what you learned through your writing applicable and relevant to the real world, your values, and your future self or career?
- Conclude/Wrap-Up: Finally, discuss how this experience impacts you personally when evaluating your role and others’ roles in the world. Conclude with how you plan to put information gained from this experience into practice. In other words, demonstrate your personal growth. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” Hence, explain how you plan to “be the change” in the world on this issue based on what you learned from your meaningful research paper project. Address how you might continue to educate others, raise awareness, or pursue actions that may change laws, policies, practices, and people’s empathy, etc., about this social problem issue in the world.
