Loop on Henle’s main function is for reabsorbtion and is located in the kidney. The diuretic furosemide works as an agent to slow down the the reabsorbtion process of sodium/chloride. Fluid loops reabsorbtion back to blood stream then leading to increased urine formation and aid in the excretion process and regulation of fluids and minerals(Colbert & Woodrow, 2019).
Diuretics assist in treatment for edema; swelling from retention of fluids in tissue of limbs. Underlying causes may include; CHF, pulmonary edema, liver, and kidney disease. Swelling; retention of fluids within an organ or extremity. Also, in some cases used in treatment for HTN and edema from recent travel on airplane(Colbert & Woodrow, 2019).
Side effects; frequency and dehydration.
Precautions/contraindications: Liver disease: may not work as intended or have a cumulative effect. Digoxin(heart) may require a potassium supplement, furosemide can increase uric acid levels, corticosteroids(adrenal)can decrease vitamin K levels, Lithium(Alcohol) can increase risk of toxicity, and Indomethacin(Gout)may decrease the effect of medication(Mayo,2021).
