The following is the research-response-essay/paper assignment that you will progressively work on as the final major essay until it is due for submission on Friday, December 17, 2021. Students are strongly advised to not procrastinate with this assignment.
RESEARCH Paper ASSIGNMENTDO THIS: In the article referenced by the attached link:  https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a15895746/bust-big-tech-silicon-valley/
Do you agree or disagree with this debate even by Scott Galloway that: Silicon Valley is a “Tax-Avoiding, Job-Killing, Soul-Sucking Machine: that “Four companies dominate our daily lives unlike any other in human history: Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google. We love our nifty phones and just-a-click-away services, but these behemoths enjoy unfettered economic domination and hoard riches on a scale not seen since the monopolies of the gilded age. The only logical conclusion? We must burst up big tech”?
Expectations:  Whether you agree or disagree with Scott Galloway, this assignment calls for logical and objective argumentation with documented in-text references, documentation, and a Works Cited page.
Mini Lecture:  Source-based writing entails careful reading, reflecting, annotating, analyzing, paraphrasing, synthesizing,  and responding to selected text using rhetorical argumentation. In a source-based response paper, therefore, a writer examines arguments presented on a topic from a particular subject. Then he or she isolates the theme/major argument of that writing and sets out to prove, disprove, or adjust if necessary, previous views, personal or otherwise, on that stated contention. The process should begin with the reader gathering his or her own thoughts on what has been read [what THEY have said] then he or she must search for evidence [what I SAY] within that reading itself or consult other sources that will help support or “back up” the stated point-of-view, statement, or argument. That writer’s argument may be either a question, an arbitrary contention, or a statement about some specific prevailing argument on a topic. The reader must first FOCUS the particular point to be addressed from that topic in his or her own terms, then continue to examine what the writer has asserted in the source article(s) or reading(s).
Developing a fitting response to the stated argument is the next step in the source-based writing process. The writer begins by drafting his or her own thoughts on that topic first and then uses the gathered or “synthesized” materials to “back up,” support, or substantiate the argument.  During this stage, the writer will use sources primarily from the source text to validate arguments, as well as to maintain currency of information borrowed or used.
After revising and editing a rough draft or essay plan, one writes the clean final essay with in-text (inserting any borrowed material parenthetically within the paragraphs themselves) throughout the various paragraphs of the essay. Finally, the writer complies a list of all sources from which  he or she has used supporting evidence for claims made in his or her essay on a separate page and attaches that page to the final product. This final page is the Works Cited page. That final paper will not be credible or complete without a well-prepared, well-documented, and well-formatted works cited page (See Hacker and Sommers: A Pocket Style Manual —). Because English falls under the category of the Humanities, the preferred format expected for documentation both in-text and at the end of the finished essay is the Modern Language Association (MLA) format.
