You will be developing a creative quarter project that helps you better understand any topic relating to speculative fiction in Japan (though the project can be comparative!) using materials both from and outside of the syllabus. Ideas for topics can include a theory or concept you learned in this class; novels by one of the writers mentioned in the class but not covered; the work of a particular author or filmmaker; and anything related to the study/creation of speculative Japanophone fiction!
Research projects can be anything ranging from essays, podcast episodes, videos, comic strips depicting a scene in a story, zines, short stories, or anything that isnt an essay.

The goal of these projects is for you to showcase your independent approaches to the study of speculative fiction and Japanophone literature. Your main task is to develop a project that speaks to your intellectual curiosity and individual interests through which you can confidently help others understand your topic.

Proposal due (600 words). The proposal should be a short essay describes and puts into narrative the following:

  1. What will your project look like?

  2. How the project will connect to an idea from the class?

  3. What will your project try to teach a general audience?

  4. A bibliography of at least 4 sources
