You cannot have one without the other. Critical thinking is necessary in order to build strategies, connect ideas and scrutinize arguments (Indeed Career Guide 2021). You’re able to reflect to correct the errors that are essential to move forward with productive skills. Whether you’re a plumber or a doctor, the ability to critically think is necessary in order to improve your job production and advancement.
Critical thinking is important is nearly every job. It’s a habit that’s used to problem solve and can be used in any situation (Campbell 2021). It allows someone to ask questions and come up with new ways to accomplish whatever task is necessary. It helps to build teamwork, communication skills and leadership.
There has been a big push in recent years to go to college so you can get a better job and be more secure but during this time, there has been a lot lost. Critical thinking is one of those skills. There seems to be a lack of basic knowledge on how to maintain things. Labor jobs are being pushed aside and people are no longer learning how to fix the simple issues. This in turn costs a lot of money and there is a loss of basic survival knowledge. I think we have all learned during this pandemic how important it is to know the basics of tasks. You don’t have to be a mechanic but it is nice to have the skill to learn how to have the basic knowledge of how to fix engines or how to ask the questions needed to learn these skills. College education is extremely important. We cannot advance without this knowledge however, there are skills that are being pushed aside for this reason.

Week 4: Education and the Economy
The educational system should prepare individuals for the job force, but they also need to prepare individuals to think critically. There is not enough emphasis on critical thinking skills, and they are overlooked. Preparing for the job force is necessary because the individual must be taught the skills necessary for the job functions to be performed correctly, however critical thinking is equally important.
My thoughts tend to lean towards conflict theory on this topic. I do not think children or young adults should just be taught one thing such as being prepared to do their one job and be done. To earn financial freedom nowadays, one simply cannot and should not rely on one source of income from one job. It is a necessity to have additional sources of income and that requires using critical thinking skills. You must be able to recognize a need for additional income and find the solution to produce ideas from which that additional income is going to come from. Not everyone has to be an entrepreneur or someone who has their own business or side hustle, but critical thinking skills can be used to make decisions when it comes to finances. Critical thinking skills can also give the individual a “leg up” in their employment allowing them the potential to work their way up the ladder or even something as simple as being offered overtime because they are able to do more than the average employee.
As we look at current events a good example of why the educational systems should prepare individuals for both is the most recent covid 19 pandemic and the unemployment rates. It does not necessarily matter that you have a steady job or steady pay because many businesses have been forced to lay off their employees. With no job, personal problems and financial despair have become apparent. It has become hard for individuals when it comes to paying their mortgage, feeding their children, or finding new employment. With a lack of critical thinking tools, it would be extremely difficult to find a way to address these issues. “More than nine in 10 of the world’s workers continue to live in countries with some sort of workplace closures, with the Americas experiencing the greatest restrictions, the Geneva-based UN body said.” (Hard Times Forecast for Global Job Recovery in 2020, Warns UN Labour, 2020). It is essential during these tough times to have some sort of job skill or technical skill along with critical thinking skills to press on and to keep moving ahead. Even if you are an individual that has been financially impacted or left unemployed by the covid-19 pandemic if you have been taught both sets of skills then you are able to think your way out of despair and put your skills to use to survive.
