In your work as human service professionals, you will be a part of many teams. Regardless of your role as facilitator, employee, co-worker, case manager, etc., being an effective and respectful communicator will allow you to form partnerships that will positively impact your agency and your clients.
Initial Post:
At times we will receive feedback from others, and sometimes this feedback can make us feel defensive, frustrated, and misunderstood. Identify one of the situations below that might make it challenging to receive feedback for you personally and state why.
- Then indicate how you will handle the situation.
- Be sure you use quotes to identify what exactly you will say. Include anything regarding non-verbal communication that you feel important to note.
- You are a case manager for high-risk sex offenders. At your review, your boss determines that your caseload is lower than your peers, who manage minimal risk community offenders. She plans to give you another 6 cases, so your peers stop complaining to her about you.
- You pick up the phone, and immediately you hear your client screaming about how you never answer your phone, and how nice it must be to make money for doing nothing.
- During your weekly team meeting, several of your peers suggest meeting with clients over the phone, rather than taking the time to meet at their homes. You disagree.
- You are the victim advocate; while meeting with the District Attorney who represents your clients in course, he suggests you need to do a better job preparing your clients for court.
- You are special needs case manager; while attending a meeting at school for one of your students, the parent communicates that they feel like you are not doing your job because their son is still getting bullied.
