I have been sooverwhelmed with excitement this week because of the experiences that I plan tohave this quarter. In social work we discuss policy so much, but I have so littleexperience in it. Working with the city manager in Ashburn will give me lots ofinsight on how policies are formed and how city officials vote and worktogether for the better of the city. Two feelings I have experienced this weekare joy and optimism. While talking with my site supervisor, I learned that thecity of Ashburn lacks a hospital, mental health/drug program, and a WalMart.All things that will help the community be stronger and get residents the helpthey need. I have researched funding for hospitals and discussed the benefitsof having a hospital in Ashburn. The benefits include possibly lowering thedeath rate, closer access for residents who lack resources to drive to the nexttown, and giving residents the resources they need for health care. My sitesupervisor also shared the idea of starting a city town hall meeting everymonth to hear the voices in the community and see how we can help makeimprovements. This will be a challenge for me but I am ready to take it onbecause I know it will help me as a professional social worker. With thepandemic going on, I feel there are plenty of resources and influences to helpme encourage change at my practicum.

To become a MSW in Advanced General Practice, field education isrequired. Field education provides an opportunity for learners to demonstratethe skills gained from coursework and apply them in real-world experiences(Capella University, n.d.). There are several developmental stages mostlearners experience throughout their practicum. Those stages are anticipation,disillusionment, confrontation, competence, and culmination (CapellaUniversity, n.d.). During this first week of field education, I have feltanxious and excited. I am excited because am I returning to a location thatadded to my experience as a social work professional. I had the opportunity toreconnect with some of my old coworkers and I am glad that they are currentlyworking here.
When I previously worked at this location,I was in direct care with the youth. I have to refrain from reacting oninstinct and remain on the sidelines in certain situations. Those situationshave given me anxiety because I feel as if I am not in control of the problemthat may be arising in my presence. This is my first week in my intern role.This week my supervisor has tasked me with shadowing the counselors. I haveobserved individual sessions, group sessions, consultation, a meeting for aspecialized treatment plan (STP), a treatment team, and a clinical meeting.
