Introduction
This scenario introduces you to the themes of the course. The scenario will place you in the situation of working with the various levels of government (local, state, and federal).
Purpose
The purpose of this scenario is to investigate how the government functions and to introduce you to scenarios as an introductory tool to specific units. This first scenario places you in the role of a recent member of the city council in order to gain a deeper appreciation of local government operations.
Scenario
John Singleton developed an interest in local politics after taking a course in State and Local Government in college. Upon graduation, John decided to run for city council. After being elected to the city council, John was assigned to a city council committee that was responsible for developing the city budget. John had never worked on a budget before and was not completely familiar with how the various local government departments interacted with state and federal governments. Mike Murphy had been a member of the city council for the past 20 years and was principally responsible for the creation of the local budget for the city council to vote on. Mike agreed to mentor John and explained some of the inner workings of the budget process, which included meeting with department officials to determine budget needs, speaking with local citizens, and working with the Mayor. Mike tasked John with developing a list of resources he could turn to for more information about the workings of local government as the first step in his mentorship.
Your Task
You are to take the role of John Singleton, a new member of the city council, and you are to answer Mike’s task of developing a list of resources he could turn to for more information about the workings of local government. This assignment is worth two points and is required for you to continue through the course. It will prepare you for the course scenarios that follow.
