What to Include

  1. Use the approaches discussed in the Module 2 Writing Guide to develop a search strategy related to the research question for your final project (or to examine a tentative research question for this purpose). The "Finding Sources" video in the Module 2 guide "Finding and Evaluating Sources" may help you put together a strategy.
  2. Develop your own search strategy based on your topic (don’t worry if you haven’t finalized your topic yet- use this exercise to help you reach that goal). Propose three search terms or strings of terms, and select two databases to search. Perform your search as developed by you in both databases.
  3. Submit an initial post that evaluates your search strategy by answering the following questions or prompts. Remember to submit your post in paragraph form and not as a list.
    • What is your research question?
    • What search terms did you choose? These terms can be single or combinations of terms- include the terms exactly as you entered them in the databases.
    • What databases did you chose for your search, and why did you make these choices? If you’re struggling to pick databases, then try arranging databases by subject or run your search on EBSCO Discovery (Links to an external site.) and see what databases your search hits are coming from.
    • Reflect on the usefulness of your strategy. Were there differences between the search results from the two different databases, or did you find a lot of overlap? Was one database more useful for your search? Were your search terms effective, or were they too broad?
    • Did you identify sources that might be useful for your final paper?
  4. Reflect on what you’ve learned from planning your search strategy in advance – is there a better strategy that you could use in the future? Is it worth your time to plan a strategy before starting a search? Briefly summarize your self-reflection (2-3 sentences).
  5. Submit a peer response to at least one fellow student’s posting – try finding a peer who has not yet received a peer response. In your peer response, provide a thoughtful comment related to your peer’s self-reflection. Do you have any suggestions for addressing their challenge?
  6. NOTE: Recall that an initial post should reflect a length of 2 strong paragraphs, whereas a peer response should consist of 1 strong paragraph of thoughtful content.
