1013.1.1 : Self-Discovery andMindfulness

The graduate evaluates and displays behaviors consistentwith the process of self-discovery and mindfulness.

INTRODUCTION

Bioreactions (i.e., fight, flight, freeze, or appease)include quick responses to stimuli or threats that are dangerous and fearfulexperiences, many of which are caused by social interactions. Bioreactions helpthe brain reinforce certain pathways. This is one way to learn. Some pathwaysthen associate that past reaction with similar events. The fear response maythen become associated with other non-fearful events. Because the brain is sogood at making these associations, we are not even aware of the miscue.

Bioreactions are automatic responses that happen within1114 milliseconds. In most cases, they are not under your control. However, you can learn to become aware of when you are experiencing a bioreaction bypaying attention to what is going on in your body.

To become aware of your bioreactions, it may be helpful toask yourself the following questions:

  • What event/experience led to the bioreaction?
  • What emotions did you feel?
  • How did your body react?
  • What, if anything, did you do differently when you noticed you were having a bioreaction?
  • Why is it important for you to be aware of your bioreactions?

A.     Describe a time when you were in a socialsituation that triggered a bioreaction(s) by doing the following:

The Bio-reactionthat I will be describing will be one that happened not to long ago, it waswhen I was flying to Portland Oregon.

1.  Describe the environment around you before andduring the bioreaction(s).

I was already nervous about flying and I do not like to benot in control of the situation, and it made me anxious.

2.  Describe the stimulus (which the amygdalainterprets as a threat) that triggered the bioreaction.

When I was on the plane, I started to have the reaction whichI wanted to run away. I started to sweat and to get nervous and I did not wantto be there.

3.  Describe the bioreaction(s) (i.e., fight, flight, freeze, and appease) you experienced.

Flight, I wanted to leave the plane

4.  Describe the physical sensations (e.g., sweatypalms, tight muscles) you experienced in your body when you became aware of thebioreaction(s).

I was sweaty, my muscles were cramped, and I started to get amigraine.

5.  Describe the feeling(s) you experienced in thesocial situation before, during, and after the bioreaction(s).

When I went to the airport I was anxious because I was flyingwith my 72 year old father who needed extra help, I was flying with my 10 yearold daughter who has never flown and then my fiance. We were flying to see mybrother and meet his son for the first time and I was very nervous because my brotherand I have recently have repaired our relationship, so I was nervous witheverything. Then during the situation I was anxious because there was allot of turbulenceduring the plane ride. I wanted to leave the situation but I was unable tobecause we were in a tight space and it was a 6 hour flight. After the flight Iwas relieved, I was able to breathe it felt like the weight that was on my chestwas lifted.

6.  Describe what you would do differently tosuccessfully navigate this type of reaction the next time you experience asimilar social situation.

Next time I will probably take some time of medication beforeI fly, also I wasnt such a nice person when I was flying so I would hopefullycheck my attitude.

a.      Reflect on why it is important to react differentlywhen you experience this bioreaction.

It is importanton how you react with different experience because you can affect on how othersreact to you. In my case it was my daughter, my daughter was becoming a tadnervous because of how I was acting.

B.     Demonstrate professional communication in thecontent and presentation of your submission.
