What is it?

Write an "I want it" song about Shackleton’s deepest desire.  This is in line with the song My Shotat the beginning of Hamilton.  To refresh your memory, review the lyrics (and especially Miranda’s side notes) in My Shot.

What is the purpose?

Embed an inciting incident into a "Gotta have it" song.

What will you gain from it?

You’ll be apply to identify and apply an inciting incident to someone else’s story.

How do you do it?

  1. First identify Shackleton’s deepest desire(which pushes him to excel)?
  2. Identify an inciting incident that triggered–or led to–this desire (you will need to research his past).
  3. Finally, create a story that includes both the inciting incident and his deepest desire.

It doesn’t have to be polished or complete.  (Hey, we’re just experimenting with ideas!)  But you do need to develop it beyond a mere idea or handful of lines.  Shoot for about 8 stanzas, with 4 lines per stanza.

What do you submit?

Submit two parts:

  1. Your song—written out
  2. A reflection.  In a robust paragraph, explore what you discovered about weaving an inciting incident into your story.
