Discussion 1 “Severance, Prologue

A) In the novel’s first few pages, an unidentified narrator introduces us to the post-apocalyptic world that she finds herself in along with only a few other survivors. How prepared are they to survive in this new world they find themselves in? Is Ma implying anything about the way the vast majority of us live in the 21st Century?
B) Identify/Quote at least one passage in the Prologue that Ma intends for readers to find humorous, at least in part. Explain the humor.

A) Each detail included in any novel is a careful choice made by the author. This is an obvious point, but we often don’t think much about this fact. While reading these novels, I want you to try to keep this fact in mind and ask yourself about the possible reasons for the choices made. For instance: it’s no surprise that the narrator has a job; most adults do. But think about the narrator’s particular job. It doesn’t have to be what it is, so why does Ling “give” the narrator this job? What is its relevance or significance to the novel overall, do you think?
B) How would you describe what life is like for Jonathan and the narrator in New York? Why does neither like New York much?
