Solution-focused therapy explore hypothetical solutions, exceptions to the problem, and solution descriptions, and not interested in exploring the history of problems aka “root causes.” Solution-focused therapy would not prevent conversations about cultural factors but would not initiate the topic.  Narrative therapists recognize one’s history is is how the family understands how to come to the present. The focus is to elicit descriptions of a clients resources about the problem and help client de-construct their own self-talk/self narratives that support a problem. While narrative therapy would explore the effects of culture, power gender, race, and client responses to these factors.
