The first essay is a definition paper. You need to define (explain in detail) the qualities and characteristics needed for a successful society. Society is both a concept and a living, breathing, changing entity. This essay should explain your subjective view of what makes a society work well.
Include a thesis statement which clearly establishes the main idea of your essay. Within the body of the essay, you will need to explore the essential qualities needed for a healthy society. Examples might include the following:
- Freedom
- Free speech
- Equality
- Educational opportunities
These are ideas only. For your essay, you will be defining a healthy society in your own terms.

Each body paragraph must include a clear, focused topic sentence.
Length & Formatting
This essay must:
- be 1,000 to 1,250 words long
- be double-spaced with 1-inch margins on all sides
- have an APA-style cover page

- Do not use any research–not even a dictionary
- Do not use any form of the pronoun "you"
