Summarize what Philip Sipiora, the editor of the book, Reading and Writing about Literature, analyzes about “Indian Camp” in his chapter on “Analyzing ‘Indian Camp'” on pages 32-34. Your summary should answer the questions listed below.  You may also just answer each question individually. You do not need to rewrite the question. (You can click the title link to download the source or use the e-reader below.)

Important guidelines:

  • Before you start to summarize the source and discuss it, you need to clearly name the source by full title and full name of the author and write a topic sentence that organizes your summary. Example: In “Analyzing ‘Indian Camp,'” in his book, Reading and Writing about Literature, Phillip Sipiora examines issues with style, characters, plot, point-of-view, theme, and metaphor in Ernest Hemingway’s short story. (Do not just copy or plagiarize my example. Use it as a guide to help you to write your own topic sentence. Note: book titles are italicized and chapter titles are put in quotation marks. If a title appears inside a quote, then use single quotation marks: “Analyzing ‘Indian Camp.'” Ending punctuation goes inside the closing quotation marks.)
  • Write complete sentences and paragraphs. Do NOT just list terms or write fragmented notes. Keep in mind that this is an advanced college English class, so use proper grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. For help with grammar, see:   https://www.grammarly.com/blog/category/handbook/
  • Remember to properly refer to the author by last name when referencing the source. When first mentioned, write the full name of an author; thereafter, write the last name. Use phrases like, “According to Sipiora” and “Sipiora explains.”  See: https://tinyurl.com/y69ps8tr
  • Provide proper in-text parenthetical citations per MLA guidelines for all quoted and paraphrased information from the textbook (Do NOT plagiarize.) See MLA in-text guidelines: https://tinyurl.com/y673xs3c
  • Make sure you credit Sipiora for his references to Hemingway; otherwise, it can look like you are taking credit for his work. Example: Sipiora quotes Hemingway…(qtd. in Sipiora 34). Note: When referring to sources quoted by the author and not by you, use proper parenthetical citation (qtd. in last name of author and page number); “qtd” stands for quoted.
  • Do not be too general or short. Be sure to support your answers with evidence and details from the source. Pretend you are explaining the source to someone who has not read it to be sure you include enough details so that someone who has not read the source understands what you are talking about. Write objectively and analytically. See tips for writing about literature: https://tinyurl.com/uschs47b
  • Do Not just repeat, copy, or overly quote the source. Be sure to write most of the summary in your own words. Review how to write an academic summary
  • Questions:
  1. Explain what Sipiora says about the importance of carefully understanding and accurately explaining the main literary elements that make up a story before a reader can respond and interpret the story.
  2. According to Sipiora, what are some style issues to consider when interpreting Ernest Hemingway’s “Indian Camp”?
  3. What issues with character does Sipiora point out? Add any issues with character that Sipiora maybe missed or did not point out. Think about the role of the Native American woman or the absence of any mention of Nick’s own mother in the story.
  4. What plot issues does Sipiora discuss and why? Why is it important to analyze the plot beyond just listing the events that an author uses? While the plot of “Indian Camp” seems simple, what deeper meaning might exist beyond the events in the story?
  5. Discuss what Sipiora observes are point-of-view issues. If you are not familiar with the literary term, “point-of-view,” see: https://literaryterms.net/narrator/
  6. According to Sipiora, what are some of the issues with the themes in “Indian Camp”?
  7. What metaphors does Sipiora discuss? What might the metaphors symbolize?
