We have focused recently on Frances great works of civil engineering a canal, a        cathedral, an iconic tower. And we have looked at England’s engineering achievements — transportation, manufacturing, warfare. Why do you think one nation focuses so       intently on technology that looks outward, towards the dynamic consolidation of the  entire world, while another focuses equally intently inward, towards the static             maintenance of the status quo? We have seen this dialectic throughout history —        inward-looking Egypt vs outward-gazing Persia; the Aztecs thrusting outward but the Chinese rejecting the imperial opportunity offered by Zheng He.

Where would you place the United States on this spectrum, during its rise to world      prominence, but also in recent years as relating to China — which may have moved on from its historic inward gaze to a new imperialist vision? In other words, how has what you learned in this class informed your ability to interpret world events?
