This assignment is designed to help you get the most out of reading a chapter in a textbook, in any subject, not just history. It’s called SQ3R, which stands for “Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review.” It puts you the reader in the driver’s seat when you are sitting down with a textbook.

First, here is a video I recorded that goes over the techniques of SQ3R, This page also has a PowerPoint presentation that has an example of what I want you to do for this assignment.

The online textbook I’ve assigned is a concise edition and does not have many of the features that publishers’ textbooks have, so I’m improvising on some parts of this assignment. Complete each step below:

1. Survey

Look through and write down one brief description of any chosen image, and one detail from any one of the maps displayed in the chapter.

2. Question

In to Chapter 1, go the sub-heading, “Belief, Thought and Learning,” on page 27. It is a sub-heading of the heading “Mesopotamia,” on page 24.

Compose a question based on this sub-heading.                                                            

3. Read/Recite/Review                                                

1. Write your answer, based on the question you created. Answer completely fully using the information in the textbook.
2. You can use bullet points or full sentences. Do what works best for you.

Don’t overthink this assignment. There are two kinds of assignments, formative and summative. Formative assignments are designed to teach you how to gather information. Summative assignments are designed to get you to interpret and analyze that information. This assignment is as formative as it gets and as straightforward as it looks.
