Researchers often use a method called an experiment in order to study the causes of human and animal behavior. Design such an experiment based on a change in behavior you have observed in yourself or your roommates this past semester (e.g., eating or sleeping habits, exercise regime, game playing, etc.). Select a behavior that you are particularly interested in studying, and then design the experiment to investigate a possible cause of that behavior. Address the following questions.

  • What is the hypothesis you will test in your experiment?
  • What are the independent and dependent variables?
  • Who will be the subjects or participants in your study?
  • What are the experimental and control group conditions? Here, you may assume that you have the resources necessary to conduct your experiment and that you can control, or manipulate, the environment of your subjects as necessary. For example, suppose your hypothesis is as follows: Higher levels of stress from a heavy course workload increase eating activity. Assume that you have the ability to control the workload, etc., of your subjects.
  • How will you assign your subjects to groups?
  • What are the possible results of your study, and what might these results indicate about your hypothesis?

In a multi-paragraph essay, describe your experiment and explain how you will conduct this experiment to test your hypothesis. Be sure to propose your hypothesis, and then describe the independent and dependent variables, the experimental and control conditions, the subject or participant groups, and the conclusions you can draw based on the results of your experiment. Include information from class materials and readings to support your discussion.


The Music on the Comprehension Tests

            The current experiment involves my peers in the course. It tests whether listening to the lo-fi chill beating study mix helps students concentrate and perform better in reading comprehension tests. The experiment also helps investigate whether the genre of music matters. The experiment setup is a classroom that is free from distractions such as noise containing 21 students. Lo-fi non-lyrical and lo-fi lyrical music will be required. Additionally, a passage that the students will be reading and a comprehension test involving the chosen passage are also needed to complete the experiment. Being in the same class means that all students have the same reading level. The students will be assigned randomly in the experimental and control groups as follows: Seven students will listen to lo-fi chill beats and lyrical music while reading a selected passage, seven students will listen to lo-fi non-lyrical music while reading the passage, and seven students will not have any background music while reading the passage.

            After supposed my hypothesis as follow: listening to lo-fi chill beats and lyrical beats while reading a passage leads to higher scores on the reading comprehension test, variables were identified.  The independent variables for the study include: Lo-fi chill beats and non-lyrical study mix music genre. On the other hand, dependent variable: comprehension test reading score.

            A random sampling technique was used to select the participants, who are college classmates. All participants are in the same year of study and most likely possess the same reading level. The main reason for adhering to the above conditions is to ensure all participants have comparable reading skills. All 21 participants were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups during the experiment.

           The first two groups are considered experimental groups and include students who listen to music beating while reading a passage. The third group is the control group and involves students not listening to background music while reading the passage. When it comes to assigning subjects to groups, random assignment was preferred to make sure that all subjects were comparable to each other. Additionally, this is essential in generalization as it can be used to show what is present in the larger population.

           Three possible results can be obtained from the experiment based on the tested scenarios. In the first scenario, they were listening to lo-fi lyrical music while reading contributed to a higher score in the comprehension test than listening to beat without background music (Harrysson 5). The discoveries help to prove the hypothesis that lo-fi chill music beats help in reading comprehension as long as there is no lyrical content. In the second scenario, they were listening to lo-fi lyrical music while reading contributed to higher comprehension test scores than non-lyrical music without background music (Harrysson 6). There are no lo-fi chill beats or background music in the third scenario. However, the group scored higher in the comprehension test than those with lyrical music while reading. Therefore, when this indicates that as long as there is no lyrical music to distract the participants, they are likely to score high in their tests. The conclusion is that any genre of reading music, especially lo-fi music, can help with reading comprehension by increasing concentration levels.
