How do we anticipate change management risks and mitigate them to give our organizational change initiative the best chance of success? Once your organizational change initiative has the green light and youve gained the necessary support and funding to get the project kicked off, you need to shift your focus from persuading your sponsors to convincing the rest of the organization. This is where change management really moves into high gear. In order to manage the change implementation effectively, though, you need to plan for the many forms of resistance that can undermine your initiative and for leveraging the help of individuals and groups who are naturally predisposed toward your change effort. To do this, you will want to identify the various stakeholder groups that you will encounter in this change journey, anticipate how they will respond to the change, and figure out the best way to interact with them. Where there is resistance, you will need to strategize how to address it. Where there is support, you will need to strategize how to harness it as a lever for influencing resistors and the majority who are in the middle. This analysis is the basis for your change management strategy and plan. Keep in mind, resistance is like an iceberg: there is the tip that pokes up out of the water and is easily visible, and then there is a much more widespread mass of resistance that is hidden from view. Put yourself in their shoes and see the change through their eyes.

Review your readings for this week, which introduce you to the stakeholder, culture, impact, and risk assessment portions of the change management process; then reflect on the various groups within your organization that would need to be engaged, guided, and supported as well as on potential obstacles that would need to be addressed during a change implementation. Then write a post addressing the following:

  • Describe an example youve observed of an organizational change effort being derailed by resistance from stakeholder groups, from poor organizational alignment with strategic goals and measurements, an organizational culture that does not support the change, interference from external factors, a lack of capacity, or from one of the other organizational readiness factors described in the readings. What do you feel could have been done to mitigate that risk beforehand?
  • Not everyone is resistant to change: Some will be predisposed to supporting it. Give an example of how you have seen supporters harnessed to influence the rest of the organization.
