Your discussion should be at most 1 page, double spaced, 11 point font (minimum is 1 paragraph). Your discussion for the experiment should focus on explaining your results, interpreting your results and discussing whether they are reasonable (remember to use context – for example, literature values for any results for which those values are available). Observations should be used to interpret what is happening chemically. (For example, instead of stating, ‘The spot was higher’ (an observation), it is better to explain by stating, ‘Relative to the reference spot, the spot in Lane A was higher indicating that the compound is less polar than the reference compound’.)
When writing your discussion, you should consider the following questions. You may use point form to write your discussion – paragraph format is not required.
- Interpret the results of each TLC. For example, explain how you identified each spot and how the Rf values relate to the compounds’ relative polarities.
- Do you expect the different compounds that could be your unknown to interact differently with the silica plate? With the solvent? Explain your reasoning.
- What is the best way to spot your TLC? Why? Explain your reasoning.
- Is it possible to compare results from two different TLC plates without a common spot? Explain your reasoning.
- Can TLC be used to identify a compound? Explain how.
- If you did an experiment, when would you perform a TLC? Why would you use it? Explain briefly.
- How could you use TLCs to monitor the completion of a reaction?
- How might the TLC of a pure substance differ from that of crude (impure) substance?
