Black women in the United States experience unacceptably poor maternal health outcomes, including disproportionately high rates of death related to pregnancy or childbirth (VDH, 2018). Both societal and health system factors contribute to high rates of poor health outcomes and maternal mortality for Black women, who are more likely to experience barriers to obtaining quality care and often face racial discrimination throughout their lives. Within maternal health, black women in the United States are more likely to die from pregnancy or childbirth than women in any other race group (VDH, 2018). They three to four times more likely to experience a pregnancy-related death than white women or experience more maternal health complications than white women (VDH, 2018).
Perinatal classes can help reduce the anxiety women may feel about labor and delivery, and they also can help new parents adapt more easily to life with a newborn (Ashfar et al., 2021). Women who took a childbirth education class or had a birth plan were more likely to have a vaginal delivery than women who didn’t. Vaginal delivery is less invasive than a C-section, and it tends to lead to shorter hospital stays, lower infection rates, and quicker recovery (Ashfar et al., 2021). Also, women who attended educational classes identified issues quicker and sought medical attention which decreased the overall complications during pregnancy (Ashfar et al., 2021).
