First-person (John)

Good day everyone!

This week’s lesson is about something I have always thought was interesting.

Encryption is something that can save your information if it ever falls into the wrong hands. The thing with encryption is that it is only as strong as the type of encryption used. There has been a lot of turnover when it comes to encryption over the last 20+  years. They keep being figured out by attackers and when this happens the encryption method is no longer secure and a new one must be found. The good thing about encryption methods going out of date is the fact that they are always replaced with something much more secure in most cases. Something that has been threatening encryption is the inception of quantum computers. They work at a much faster rate and can almost render encryption methods we use today useless. The cryptography world is still trying to find a way to make something a quantum computer would find challenging. There are many ways encryption is used in the computing world. You can send secure messages across the internet and ensure that information kept on a device’s hard drive is secure by encrypting the hard drive itself or encrypting sections of the hard drive. When you lose the password to an encrypted hard drive you will lose all of your information because it is protected from attempts to read what’s inside.

Password management is something a lot of people struggle with. in today’s connected world people have many passwords they have to juggle in their mind all of the time to connect to the things they have. Many people resort to having one password for many different accounts across the internet and when this happens it creates a very weak security posture that is very susceptible to attacks. Make sure all of your passwords are unique with many different kinds of characters to prevent it from being guessed so easily or cracked with a dictionary attack. Having a password manager can help make this easier. Password managers keep all of your passwords in one secure environment making it to where you only have to remember one password. The problem with this is if the password to your password manager is compromised all of your passwords are compromised. Having some kind of multifactor authentication on your password manager would help make it as secure as it can be.

Have a great day everyone!

Hello class,  when I look at passwords and I think about trying to manage them it can be a  field day for hackers. It is hard to remember many passwords for multiple devices. So if you save your password on a computer with malware your main password can be comprised. All passwords that are saved to that computer can and will be comprised.  With the smartest of hackers, it will be much easier for hackers to hack your devices. Then if you share passwords with your friend or family members it will still put your passwords at risk.

Then there is the strength of passwords programs.  Number 0ne is that you do not have to have a strong memory. The benefit of having a password manager it will boost your cyber security is you will not have to have a good memory. This will be good because not trying to remember passwords can be stressful.  If you have to keep changing your passwords, you can lose some data. I am speaking from experience.  I have had to change so many passwords because I did not remember them.  You can use stronger passwords, fast access, more than passwords, you can manage shared accounts, and simplified cyber security.

There is some good and bad password authentication. The good is the user will be improved, increased security, reduced administration overheads. Then the bad side of using password authentication is the cost can actually be increased.  Then it will be harder to find the problems with your devices. In the end, the future of passwords can become a thing of the past. This can be really bad because anybody who will be able to hack your account is getting personal information.  The one thing that will help us if you have facial recognization. So there is pro and cons with passwords.
