Choose two of the following questions, including one from the “Communist States”
section and one from the “U.S. in East Asia” section. Answer each of your chosen
questions with a paragraph of about 6–8 sentences. Where appropriate, cite page numbers
from your texts in parenthesis: eg. (Nothing to Envy, p. 24). Don’t include “filler” text—be
concise, cut straight to the point. Note: Although you don’t need to answer every question, you
should contemplate all of the following questions since they may be adapted for the Final Exam.
Communist States (choose one):
1. In the novel To Live, How do Fugui and his family experience the Great Leap
Forward? What were their desires, their concerns, and their actual outcomes? How
is this topic (the Great Leap Forward) treated differently in the film?
2. Judging from chapters 1–3 of Nothing to Envy, how did a person’s social status
influence their day–to–day life in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea during
the late 20th century? Give at least two concrete examples, and make sure to cite the
relevant page numbers in the book.
The U.S. in East Asia (choose one):
1. Why did the United States go to war with Japan in 1941, and what was the outcome
of that war for Japan? How did events in Indochina contribute to the war between
Japan and the United States?
2. It is difficult to make sense of the Second Indochinese War (aka the “American
War” or the “Vietnam War”) solely by looking at events within Vietnam. How
might prior events outside of Vietnam have contributed to U.S. aggression in
Vietnam?
